健康的な食事や運動はもちろん重要ですが、我々は大抵、食事や運動よりもっと多くの時間を「睡眠」に費やしています。秋の夜長に、その睡眠にフォーカスしてみませんか?

秋に見直すべき睡眠について

季節は秋に移り変わり、暑さも和らいできました。この時期に見直してほしいのは、誰もが日常的に必要な「睡眠」です。

夏は夜でも気温が高く、「寝つきが悪い」「寝苦しい」といった課題があります。逆に冬になると、身体が冷えて朝起きても「寝足りない」ことがあります。その点、秋は気候が安定しており、「睡眠力」を向上させるのに最適な季節なのです。実際、この快適な時期に「睡眠力」を高めることで、夏の疲れを癒し、厳しい冬に備えることができるのです。

日本人は「寝不足の国民」として知られています。季節の変化や、寝つけない、寝ても疲れがとれないといった問題に悩むことはありませんか?

日本人の睡眠時間は欧米諸国に比べて短く、特に女性ではその傾向が顕著です。また、厚生労働省のデータによれば、現在、日本人の5人に1人が睡眠時に何らかの障害を抱えているとされています。睡眠不足は健康維持だけでなく、美容や老化の原因ともされています。

「秋の夜長」は睡眠改善に最適

睡眠は身体の調整に欠かせない重要な要素ですが、なぜか軽視されがちです。実は、乱れた睡眠習慣を改善する最適な季節が「秋」なのです。

中医学によれば、春から夏にかけて身体全体の活性が高まり、秋から冬にかけて沈静化すると考えます。身体の機能、例えば血流、消化吸収、新陳代謝などは春から夏にかけて最も活発になり、夏にはピークを迎えます。このため、夏には多くの運動や活動が必要で、夜更かししても新たな活力が湧いてきます。一方、秋から冬にかけては活力が低下し、睡眠は「早寝」が基本です。夕暮れが早まり、夜が長くなる自然のリズムに合わせて、寝る時間を調整し、睡眠時間を確保することが肝要です。長い夜にしっかりと睡眠をとり、毎日こまめに疲れをリセットし、健康を維持することが、「秋の夜長の過ごし方」において中医学的に推奨されています。

「秋の夜長」は、日照時間が夏に比べて短くなるため、「メラトニン」と呼ばれる睡眠ホルモンが出やすくなり、睡眠改善を促進します。

動物の中には冬眠するものもいますが、これは寒くなったからではなく、日照時間の短縮を感じ取ったからです。人間は冬眠しませんが、体内時計の影響で、日の長さに応じて睡眠のパターンが変わります。そして、「春眠暁を覚えず」という言葉通り、睡眠の量や質は季節によって異なります。

睡眠の変化要因

我々の睡眠は生体リズムの一環であり、これは季節ごとの日の出と日没の時間の変化によって影響を受けます。

室温やベッド周りの温度が低すぎるか高すぎると、睡眠に悪影響を与えます。

眠りと体温の関係
「睡眠力」の基本体温は、睡眠と密接な関係があります。

体温は睡眠と深い関係があります。昼間は体温を高く保ち、就寝時には身体の内部温度を下げて脳と身体を休息させる仕組みがあります。眠気が訪れるのは、皮膚から熱が逃げ、深部体温が下がり、身体が休息モードに入るからです。深い睡眠ほど、体温は大きく低下します。手足の特に甲の部分は、熱を逃がすために重要な役割を果たしています。冷え性の人は手足から熱が逃げにくく、深部体温が下がりにくいため、質の良い睡眠が難しくなります。睡眠不足は自律神経の乱れや血行不良を引き起こし、身体の冷えを悪化させる悪循環に陥る可能性があります。

睡眠はとても重要です

寝る時間を惜しむ気持ちは理解できますが、睡眠は身体を回復させ、日中を快適に過ごし、今後も健康を維持するために欠かせない要素です。また、食事も同様に重要です。食事と睡眠を優先し、健康的で充実した人生を楽しむための習慣を身につけてみましょう。
