Harufumi Kato

He is known as the inventor of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for early-stage lung cancer and a leading figure in cell therapy. He served as the chief professor of the First Department of Surgery and vice president of Tokyo Medical University, and also played an active role as the director of the Clinical Proteome Center. He has served as president of the International Society of Cytology and the International Lung Cancer Society, and has also served as chairman of the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology and president of the General Assembly of the Japanese Lung Cancer Society. He has received many awards both in Japan and abroad, including the Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology Award in 1986, and many other awards on the international stage. He has also worked as a specialist for government agencies, contributing to the development of medical research and medical technology. After graduating from Tokyo Medical University, he studied at the same university's graduate school and has experience studying abroad at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden.
